syn: Tempranillo. A typical Spanish, early ripening (Tempranillo means ‘early’), variety for red wines, known locally in Catalonia as Ull de Llebre (hare's eye). The thick-skinned Tempranillo produces deep-coloured wines with not too much alcohol that can age without losing too much colour. The wines have a fruity taste and smell, with not much acidity and some of them have the taste and smell of spices and red fruits.
