Enormous wine region that covers parts of the area between Nîmes and Narbonne. The vineyards lie on the slopes of the hills that surround this area.

-Only red, white and rosé wines
-Grape varieties red and rosé wines: Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah (the latter two together not exceeding 10% of total), Counoise, Terret noir, Piquepoul
-Grape varieties white wines: Grenache blanc, Clairette blanc, Bourboulenc blanc, Piquepoul blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle, Maccabeo, Terret, Carignan blanc, Ugni blanc (de latter four not exceeding 30% of total)
-Production red and rosé wines max. 66 hl. per ha.
-Production white wines max. 70 hl. per ha.

The largest part of the appellation, southwest of Montpellier, has a soil of sandstones, gravel and calcareous clay.

Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and mild winters. The mountains that are near to the sea trigger violent thunderstorms. This accounts for much of the annual rainfall. The relatively cold mistral can cool and dry the region.
