This region has a Mediterranean climate tempered by the Atlantic and the influence of the Cantabrian mountains. In the Rioja Baja the climate is warmer than in the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Winters are mild, as are springs. Summers are warm and stretch into long, sunny autumns. Annual rainfall ranges from 500 mm. in the Rioja Alta to 280 mm. in the Rioja Baja. Vineyards are planted to an altitude of 300-700 m.
