Cariñena


Carinena is a town in northeast Spain. Both a DO wine zone and a vine variety (also widely grown in southern France as Carignan) are named after this town. In the past, The Carinena wines were quite heavy, and therefore mixed with lighter bulk wines. Today, the wines are lighter and pleasant to drink as they are.


-Surface: 18.000 ha.
-Only red, rosé and white wines.
-Only wines from selected parcels around the city of Cariñena in the province of Zaragoza between the rivers Jalón and Huerva.
-Grape varieties red and rosé wine: Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cariñena, (Cabernet-sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Juan Ibàñez).
-Grape varieties white wine: Macabeo, (Garnacha blanca, Parrellada, Moscatel).

Calcareous clayey soil with gravels. In the lower parts sometimes ironrich soils.

The climate has a distinctly continental influence, the summers are dry and hot, the winters are cold. Vineyards are planted at an altitude of 400-700 m. Annual rainfall ranges from 350 mm. to 380 mm.
